The Sledges in Schools project is an inclusion initative by the Paralympic Sports Association and the Children's Ability Fund. The Children's Ability Fund provides the sledges for the program and the Paralympic Sports Association administers the program. Talk about TEAM WORK!
For more information about the Children's Ability Fund please go to www.childrensabilityfund.ab.ca.
The Sledges in Schools Program provides two purposes:
- To provide equipment (Sledges) for children or youth with a physical disability. Sledges can be borrowed from the PSA; enabling students with equipment to participate in skating/ hockey activities with their class in school AND
- To provide the opportunity for children and youth to try Sledge Hockey by participating in a Sledge Hockey Demo. The PSA brings out a group of twelve sledges for the class to use. We provide background information on the history, the equipment, rules and strategies of Sledge Hockey. The students get the opportunity to try Sledge Hockey first hand, as they hop in Sledge and are lead through drills and finally into a scrimmage game situation. It is a great opportunity for everyone to see the sport opportunities for sport for persons with a disability--- and to recognize the abilities of persons with a disability.
FYI: Sledge Hockey is NOT just for athletes with a disability; able-bodied athletes can compete in the sport too.

BORROW A SLEDGE
Sledges are available to Edmonton and area schools. The Sledges are loaned out to families and physical educators to provide an inclusive opportunity for students with a disability to participate in the Physical Education skating programs. Length of loan will be discussed and set at the time of booking. Arrangements for delivery or pick up of equipment will also be made at the time of booking.
SLEDGE HOCKEY DEMO
If you would like the PSA to come out and lead your class through an interactive Sledge Hockey demonstration please contact the PSA office. Schools are responsible for providing ice time for the demos and ensuring that all students are wearing proper safety equipment (helmet is mandatory).
PROGRAM FEES
There is no fee for a student to borrow a Sledge to participate in their classes Physical Education skating program. The Paralympic Sports Association believes in assisting schools in creating INCLUSIVE environments for all students.
There is $50 fee for Schools to book a SLEDGE HOCKEY Demonstration. The fee barely covers the cost to rent a vehicle to transport the sledges to the school.
LIABILITY
It is expected that liability guidelines currently in use within the school systems will be extended to the usage of sledges in skating programs. Any equipment which must be used by persons with a disability to enable them to integrate into mainstream programs must not be treated differently than equipment needed by their "non-disabled" peers. Sledges should be considered equivalent to skates for persons who cannot use the regular equipment.
If, however, the school systems require special treatment for the use of this equipment in regular physical education programs, appropriate steps will be taken to meet the requirements.

In order to participate in programs, individuals are required to obtain an annual PSA membership.
