NOVEMBER UPDATE
2004-2005
Monthly email for The Paralympic Sports Association(PSA)-NOVEMBER EDITION
Quote of the Month:
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
– George Santayana 1905 The life of Reason, Volume 1
We must remember. If we do not, the sacrifice of those one hundred thousand Canadian lives will be meaningless. They died for us, for their homes and families and friends, for a collection of traditions they cherished and a future they believed in; they died for Canada. The meaning of their sacrifice rests with our collective national consciousness; our future is their monument.
- Heather Robertson, A Terrible Beauty, The Art of Canada at War. Toronto, Lorimer, 1977

SEPTEMBER EDITION
Quote of the Back to School Month:
“One should guard against preaching to young people success in the customary form as the main aim in life. The most important motive for work in school and in life is pleasure in work, pleasure in its result, and the knowledge of the value of the result to the community.”
Albert Einstein, On Education
1879-1955
In Memory of Brenda Barton
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Brenda Barton on Saturday, August 27th. Brenda has been a very active PSA member since joining in 1998 with her son Tyler. One could always count on seeing Brenda and her family at all of the PSA special events and many of the programs. She also served on our Board of Directors for over 5 years, many of them as our Secretary. Brenda will be remembered at the PSA as a very dedicated mother, volunteer and friend. Her kindness and generosity were boundless. Brenda will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her many friends at the PSA. Our thoughts are with her family and friends.

You can visit our website, www.parasports.net to view some of the pictures taken over the past 2 months.

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS
As we head into another season of programs, we again require some dedicated volunteers to help run things. If you have volunteered in the past and/or know someone who would be interested in volunteering for any of our programs this year, please contact Fiona at the PSA office, 439-8687. Our programs are such a success because of the great group of volunteers that we have each year.
BINGOS
PSA will continue to host bingos as an option for payment for our programs. This year however there will be some changes to the format of bingos. Due to many last minute cancellations, which in turn creates additional costs to PSA, we will be requiring a post-dated cheque of $40.00 (per bingo) that will be cashed ONLY if a person does not show or does not give 48 hours notice. It is unfortunate that we have to do so, however in order to keep the bingos as a form of profit for PSA and its members, these measures need to be taken. Thank you for your cooperation and if you have any questions or concerns, please contact Fiona at the PSA office, 439-8687.
Sincerely,
Fiona & Angie

Monthly email for The Paralympic Sports Association (PSA)- AUGUST EDITION
Quote of the Month
“Change has a considerable psychological impact on the human mind. To the fearful it is threatening because it means that things may get worse. To the hopeful it is encouraging because things may get better. To the confident it is inspiring because the challenge exists to make things better.”
King Whitney Jr.

LOCAL STARS
Over the past 2 months, there have been a few PSA members who have achieved a great level of success and I would like to take this opportunity to brag about them.
Ken Thomas recently participated in the World Masters Games Road Race last month. You can read about it in an article written by Cam Tait from the Edmonton Journal in the following web link:
Alyssa Kenny, PSA’s newest Track & Field star participated in the BC Wheelchair Games last month. She took home 3 gold medals at the competition. Congratulations. It seems the new track chair has come in handy. Keep up the training.
Stephen Arsenault, of our PSA Sledge Dogs team is the most recent PSA member to become a part of a National Team. That is right, he has made the Canadian Sledge Hockey team, flying back and forth for training all summer. Congratulations Stephen. All your hard work and discipline has paid off. We look forward to cheering you on.
Dhamaka Dance Sunday July 17th
The Paralympic Sports Association is honoured to be promoting the Dhamaka Dance group Dance Festival, which was held on Sunday July 17th at the Myer Horowitz Theatre (U of A). This was a great opportunity to experience some East Indian Dancing with all proceeds of the event going to PSA. Thank you to Venita Malhotra, one of PSA soccer volunteers, who approached the PSA with this wonderful fundraising opportunity.
Klondike Breakfast Saturday July 23
Thank you to all the volunteers who came out to help out with the Klondike Breakfasts at local Sobey’s Stores. The weather was mildly temperamental, with winds gusting plates and tables all over, we were still able to feed many. We raised over around $4000, so a great thank you to all our wonderful volunteers.
Camp Unity July 24 – July 29
Well with Camp Unity over for another year, I can definitely say that I am already missing it. Camp this year, once again was a blast. The Sea Doo and tubing were definite highlights for those adventurous kids and myself. Along with the ever favourite water fight, we also had a blast swimming, wall climbing and at the luau that wrapped everything up the last night. Thank you to all the wonderful staff who made this camp a success, Angie Folkinga, Dan Magnan, Colin Lacey, Craig Roberge, Brandon Jacobs, Trish Aire, Laura Griffiths, Robin Williams, Alyson Bosch, Erin Stuart, Kim Walker, Keri Hafso, Sarah Barton, Stephen Arsenault, Natalie Webster, Takeshi Kodamo, Ben Krysa. Also a quick thank you to all the kids who camp out to Camp Unity 2005. I look forward to an ever bigger and better one next year.
