The
Sledges in Schools project provides sledges to individuals to enable
participation in school ice skating programs. In addition to participation,
this also increases the awareness of the abilities of persons with
a disability to children and young adults in the school system.
PROGRAM
The Sledges in Schools program is for school-aged children and youth
to enable them to participate in regular ice skating programs.
The sledges
will be made available to Edmonton and area schools on a loan basis
for Physical Education skating programs. Length of loan will be
discussed and set at the time of booking. Arrangements for delivery
or pick up of equipment will also be made at the time of booking.
PROGRAM FEES
There is no fee for this program. In recognizing the need for this
service, The Children's Ability Fund supplies the sledges and PSA
coordinates the program.
LIABILITY
It is expected that liability guidelines currently in use within
the school systems will be extended to the usage of sledges in skating
programs. Any equipment which must be used by persons with a disability
to enable them to integrate into mainstream programs must not be
treated differently than equipment needed by their "non-disabled"
peers. Sledges should be considered equivalent to skates for persons
who cannot use the regular equipment.
If, however,
the school systems require special treatment for the use of this
equipment in regular physical education programs, appropriate steps
will be taken to meet the requirements.
